Suitable insurance is an essential, when travelling. Price should not be the sole consideration but the factors below should be taken into account before purchasing a policy:
- Policy Excess An excess is applicable under most sections of a travel policy. This is usually highlighted in the prospectus and will be detailed in the policy / certificate.
- Conditions Exclusions and Warranties It is important to read and understand these as cover can be invalidated by failure to observe these or to disclose material facts.
- Property / Policy Limits Luggage, Money and Valuables limits should be checked as travel policies generally have low limits under these sections. An all risks extension on a household policy may provide better cover. Property claims are not normally settled on a “new for old†basis, but on the value of the goods allowing for wear and tear.
- Health Travel policies do not normally cover any claims arising directly or indirectly from pre-existing medical conditions. It may be possible to declare these conditions to the insurers and obtain terms.
- Dangerous Sports or Pastimes It is important to check that the policy purchased covers such pursuits before they are undertaken.
